Eliza Em (Townsend) James was the daughter of Uriah P. "U.P." Townsend (born 1811 in New York & died between 1870 & 1880) and Almira (Beal) Townsend (died 1843).

Eliza had the following known full-siblings:

On November 27, 1856 in Athens County, Ohio, Eliza married Absalom B. James when she was 17 and he was 22. They lived in Ohio and their first child, Mary, was born there in 1857. Then, Eliza and Absalom moved to Knox County, Missouri, where they lived and farmed for the remainder of their lives. They had the following known children:
