Rock Musician. He was a local guitar player in Austin, Texas, when he joined up with Roky Erickson, Tommy Hall and John Walton, forming the band "13th Floor Elevators" in 1965. As one of the first psychedelic bands, Sutherland contributed lyrics as well as writing and arranging the group's music. Signed to the International Artist record label, they released four LPs and seven 45 singles with hits to include "You're Gonna Miss Me", "Tried to Hide", "Fire Engine" and "Kingdom Of Heaven". Throughout the Spring of 1966, the group toured extensively in Texas, Miami, Detroit, San Francisco and appeared on American Bandstand twice before band's original lineup broke up in 1969. He continued to play music throughout the 1970s, occasionally with former members of the Elevators. He died at his home in Center Point, Texas, after being accidentally shot by his wife during a domestic dispute.
