Sibyl Lucille Sutherland passed peacefully from this world surrounded by family and loved ones in her home, Friday May 16 2014.

She was born on January 6, 1915 in San Antonio, Texas to Robert Bennett and Lena (Gibbons) Bennett. Upon graduating from Tivy in 1931, Sibyl went on to attend Schreiner Institute as one of the first few female students ever to attend. After two years of walking back and forth from her home in Center Point, Sibyl finished her schooling at Schreiner as the Great Depression took hold of America. At 18, she left home to begin teaching as the first teacher in a one room school house on the Divide, setting her firm on her course to a 42 year teaching career. Sibyl taught all over Texas before at last being offered a job back home in Kerrville, where she stayed, touching the lives of thousands of children, until she retired her chalk and eraser in 1983. She had a passion for her job, and thought often of her students after they left her charge. In 1940 she reconnected with the Center Point boy around the corner, G.C. Sutherland Jr. and became his wife, beginning a 75 year adventure together raising three kids and countless spoiled dogs. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and eventually great grandmother, Sibyl never slowed down. An artist, poet, historian, and genealogist Sibyl was always eager to share her interests with the community, and was invited to speak at the historical society on numerous occasions about the counties earliest roots and families.

A faithful Christian her entire life, Sibyl was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the first baptized member in the county. She was privileged with watching the local church grow into the family in Christ she so cherished her whole life.

She was preceded in death by her husband G.C. and son Stacy Keith Sutherland.

Those left to cherish her memory are son Beau Sutherland and wife Victoria of Kerrville, and her daughter Heather and husband Stewart Davis of Kerrville, as well as ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, 7-9 PM at Grimes Funeral Chapels. Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located on Coronado on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10 AM, officiated by Bishop Ken Davis. Interment will follow at Center Point Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Todd Sutherland, Ryan Sutherland, Stewart Davis Jr., Jared Davis, Corey Davis, Skyler Davis and Jayce Davis.

In lieu of floral tributes, the family asks all memorial contributions be made to Kerr Regional History Center, 505 Water St., Kerrville, TX, 78028, ATTN: Laura Bechtel.

The family would like to thank Peterson Hospice for all of the compassionate care when it was most needed, and Dr. Richard Johnson's office for all the years of dedicated and excellent care.

(I am a bit confused over Sibyl's birthplace. This is a portion of an article written by her for the Current Magazine: "In 1915, Sibyl was born in Kerrville across from the First Presbyterian Church, in a now-gone house on the spot now inhabited by the Red Cross at Earl Garrett and Jefferson streets. As an only child, Sibyl said growing up had its mixed blessings (something unique that single children understand). Being the center of attention can be an advantage, but as often, a disadvantage.")
