Charles A. "Charlie" Evans died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in Stillwater Medical Center following a lengthy battle with Alzheimers.
Services are scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 in First United Methodist Church followed by interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Evans was born Dec 15, 1910, on a farm near Gray, Beaver County, to Herschel Perry and Mary Elizabeth (Rhoads) Evans.
He graduated from Mountain View High School in 1928 and received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Oklahoma A & M College in 1932. Because of the depression, he returned to school during the 1932-33 school year and worked on a master's degree in engineering.
He married Bess Bryan in Stillwater on Sept. 10, 1932. They moved to Stillwater in December 1973. She died in April 1976.
Evans married Nadine Powell on Feb 19, 1980 in Fort Bragg N.C.
Evans worked for Gypsy Oil Co. from 1933 to 1935, when he went to work for the Soil Conservation Service. He remained with the SCS until retiring in 1973 as state conservationist for North Dakota. While with SCS he lived in various locations in Oklahoma for 25 years and spent the last 13 years in the state SCS office in Bismarck, N.D.
Evans was a memeber of the U.S.Army Reserves for 11 years and attained the rank of captain in military inteligence. He was a life membe of the Soil and Water Conservation Society and a memeber of the National Association of Conservation Districts.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of El Zagal Shrine in Fargo, N.D., and a memeber of Stillwater Kiwanis Club for 17 years. In recent years he was active in and was an officer for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
An active member of the First United Methodist Church of Stillwater, he served on the administrative board for several years and served as president of the Methodist Men and chairman of the board of trustees. He was past treasurer of the Jim Richardson Class.
Evans was predeceased by his parents; his only son, Charles A. Evans Jr., who died in December 1999; two brothers; one sister and a great granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Nadine, of the home; two grandchildren, Chuck Evans of Louisiana and Lee Evans and his wife, Nancy of Lowake, Texas; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Simmons; a niece, Pat Rotan; a nephew, Rick Simmons; two stepchildren. Dr. Dick Powell and his wife, Carol Ann, and Deanna Powell and her husband, Gary Corser; seven step-grandchildren, Beth Worley, and her husband, Craig, of Stillwater, Shelly Sherer and her husband, Robert of Ponca City, Malinda Boswell and her husband, Jay, of Weslaco, Texas, Jeff Glass and his wife, Lisa of Hurst, Texas, Christian and Kevin Corser of Chicago, Ill., and Kent Corser of Manhattan, Kan., and 13 great-grandchildren.
Eight of his grandsons will be pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jim Richardson Class.
