Sam Karp, 83, passed away on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Bozeman Care Center of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to John and Trintje (Sikkinga) Karp. The family came to the Gallatin Valley when Sam was 7 years of age and he attended Manhattan Christian High School.
After his schooling, he worked on the family farm and on Aug. 14, 1932, he married Anne Dykman at Churchill. The couple then lived in Harrison until 1944, when they returned to the Manhattan area, where Sam farmed until 1968. He moved to California for 12 years before returning to the valley in 1980 and worked for the U.S. Forest Service until his retirement in 1984. His family was his greatest joy and he also enjoyed traveling.
Sam is survived by his wife, Anne, of Manhattan; daughter and son in law Patricia and Lloyd Ligtenberg of Bozeman; son and daughter in law John and Barbara Karp of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren and spouses Bruce and Susan Ligtenberg of Denver, Colo., Brent and Patty Ligtenberg of Belgrade, Brian and Julie Ligtenberg of Bozeman, Denise and Tom Kimm of Manhattan, Carrie Thompson and Wendy Karp of Boise, Sam and Brandy Karp of Boise, Tasha and Duke Clinton of Moscow, Idaho, Rob and Debra Karp of Lansing, Mich., Vincent and Grace Karp of Townsend, Justin and Jolyn Karp of Helena, and Meta Karp of Boise. He is also survived by 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and one great grandson.

On 5 April 1909 Sam's parents arrived with their two months aged daughter Jantje on the SS Noordam from the Netherlands at New York. They will be going to his mother's brother Freerk Karp in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In April 1911 and November 1912 they lived in Grand Rapids, when their sons Jacob and Sam were born. Sam was very probably named for his paternal grandfather Simen Karp.
Sam lived in 1930 with his parents in the Dutch settlement Holland in Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana.
Sam Karp married on 14 August 1933 at Manhattan, Gallatin County, at the age of 21 years to the one year younger Anna Dykman, who was born in Michigan too, in Muskegon, and who had also Dutch parents, Menko Dykman and Antje Danhof.
In 1940 farmer Sam and his wife Ann live with their children Patricia A (6 y) and John M (4 y), both born in Gallatin County, at a rented farm at Hot Springs Township in Madison County, west of Gallatin County, where they lived in 1935 on a rural place. Sam's brother and farmer Jake Karp lives there too with his family.
Sam died in November 1996 at the age of almost 84 years at Bozeman, the seat of Gallatin County, Montana. His widow Anne died in August 2017, in Gallatin County too, at the age of 94 years.
