Norman Benninghove, Jr. Norman Hayes Benninghove, Jr., "Bud", a resident of West Norriton Twp. for over 50 years, died on Sunday, November 21, 2010 in Montgomery Hospital, Norristown. Born on March 7, 1925 in Holmes, Pa, Delaware County, he was a son to the late Norman H. Benninghove and the late Nora (Rickert) Benninghove.
He was the husband for 62 years to Frieda (Freimuth) Benninghove, father to Alan M. Benninghove of LeMoyne, PA, Kathy M. Gross of Southampton, PA and father-in-law to Patricia (Miller) Benninghove of Harrisonburg, VA. Besides his mother and father, he was preceded in death by a son ,The Rev. David M. Benninghove, (May 28, 2003) and by his sister Norma Stevens (1962).
A veteran of World War II, he served in the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the Second Infantry (Indianhead) Division in Europe during 1944-45 and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the "Combat Infantryman Badge", a "Bronze Star" medal, a "Distinguished Unit Emblem", the "American Campaign " medal, the "European Theatre" medal, with Four Bronze Stars, the "World War II Victory medal, and the "Army of Occupation" medal (with Germany clasp). He entered the European Theatre operation as a Private First Class, he returned with the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Second Infantry Division.
He served in the Army Reserves until the end of the Korean War (1952) including the Transportation Corp. (706th Railway Battalion)) earning the rank of Sgt. First Class. Mr. Benninghove was a 1942 graduate from Lower Merion High School and attended the University of PA. Wharton School for a year before being drafted into the Army.
He also began working in the Accounting Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad in August of 1942. After nearly 47 years, he retired in 1989 from Conrail, having served in many managerial positions in both the Freight Accounting and Computer Systems Departments.
He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, Haws Ave., Norristown and served as Sunday School Supt., Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Church Council until 1976. Also a member of Masonic Lodge Cassia Mt. Horeb #273, Ardmore, PA.
Relatives and friends are invited to share in his life celebration on Friday, November 26 beginning at 11 AM at the Boyd-Horrox Funeral Home of East Norriton, 200 West Germantown Pike, (1-800-GIVNISH) with funeral service at 12 noon. Burial will be in the Zions Lutheran Church Cemetery, Spring City, PA.
