Mrs. Helen Rose Bevans, 76, of Palmyra, formerly of Canton and LaBelle, died Thursday Dec. 12, at Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal. Born Nov. 30, 1920 in Farmington, she was a daughter of Dan and Eliza LaSchonce Taylor. In 1925 she came to live with Miss Anna and Miss Lulu MacWilliams in LaBelle. She married Robert J. Bevans Dec. 24, 1942 in LaBelle. He survives. Mrs. Bevans graduated from LaBelle High School in 1930, attended Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., and graduated from Kirksville State Teachers College in 1947. She began teaching in the Maywood School, and taught in LaBelle and Canton Public Schools for 11 years, and received a 10 year pin. She then taught at Mark Twain School in Hannibal for six years, West Pike School in Kinderhook, Ill., for three years and Elsberry Junior High for 13 years. She retired in 1978 due to ill health. She and her husband moved to Palmyra in 1978 after purchasing the Pollitt Motel which he still operates. She was known for her muscial ability and she served the various communities in which she lived by singing and playing the piano and giving voice and piano lessons. She was a member of the LaBelle Presbyterian Church, Delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority, Unity Chapter #151, Order of Eastern Star, Canton, the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Canton, and the evening Etude Music Club, Hannibal. She is also survived by two nieces, both of Kirksville. She was preceded in death by a sister.
