The 1920 US Census of Hollis, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 46 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Sr., a general store merchant, and his 33 Y/O wife, Esther (Chappell) Berry. Also living in the household was their 8 Y/O son, Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr. Joseph attended primary and secondary school in Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL.

The 1930 US Census of Hollis, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 56 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Sr., a grocery store merchant, and his 43 Y/O wife, Esther (Chappell) Berry. Also living in the household were their children: 18 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr. a tire builder at a rubber plant and 7 Y/O Bernie Milton Berry.

The 02 April 1940 US Census of Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 23 Y/O Dennis E. Whitten, a clerk at a wholesale oil company, and his 22 Y/O wife, Dorothy N. Whitten. Living as lodgers in the residence were brothers: 30 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr., a carpenter contractor, and 18 Y/O Bernie Milton Berry. This was shortly after the death of their mother, Esther Elizabeth (Chappell) Berry, on 16 Jan 1940.

The 16 Oct 1940 WWII registration card of 29 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr. was issued at Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL. It described Joseph as 5' 9" tall, 145 pounds, light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He listed the person who would always know his location as his aunt, Mrs. W. T. Thornton., whose address was Reynolds Street, Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL.

Joseph joined his brother, Bernie Milton Berry, in Chicago and worked at the family firm – Big D Products. This machine shop produced custom-made machine parts (that were sold to other companies) on the then state-of-the-art Brown & Sharpe machines. Joseph worked in secondary operations, e. g. deburring & polishing machine parts, packing & shipping and maintenance.

Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr. was the 2nd cousin 6 times removed through his mother, Esther E. (Chappell) Berry, of POTUS Thomas Jefferson. (See Find A Grave Memorial #544).
