The 1930 US Census of Hollis, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 56 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, a grocery store merchant, and his 43 Y/O wife, Esther (Chappell) Berry. Also living in the household were their children: 18 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr. a tire builder at a rubber plant and 7 Y/O Bernie Milton Berry.

Bernie attended primary and secondary school in Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL.

The 02 April 1940 US Census Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 23 Y/O Dennis E. Whitten, a clerk at a wholesale oil company, and his 22 Y/O wife, Dorothy N. Whitten. Living as lodgers in the residence were brothers: 30 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, Jr., a carpenter contractor, and 18 Y/O Bernie Milton Berry. This was shortly after the death of their mother, Esther Elizabeth (Chappell) Berry, on 16 Jan 1940.

Bernie Milton Berry served his country honorably in the Marines during WWII and Korea. He enlisted on 20 Jan 1942 and was released on 13 Mar 1952. Bernie was a military fighter aircraft mechanic including the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver in 1943.

Bernie married Irene Barbara Lentz on 15 Oct 1945 at Chicago, Cook Co., IL.

After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Bernie became an electrician and later joined the family firm of his father-in-law, Frank A. Lentz, at Alloy Metal Screw Products (2360 N. Elston Ave., Chicago, IL). This machine shop produced custom-made machine parts (that were sold to other companies) on the then state-of-the-art Brown & Sharpe machines. Bernie became a master machinist, founded his own machine shop (Big D Products) and later combined Big D with Alloy Metal Screw Products, following the death of Frank A. Lentz in 1967. Bernie ran the firm until his death in 1977.

Bernie Milton Berry was the 2nd cousin 6 times removed through his mother, Esther E. (Chappell) Berry, of POTUS Thomas Jefferson. (See Find A Grave Memorial #544).
