Jeremiah Alton the eighth child and 5th son of Valentine and
Mary Anne grew up on his father's farm just west of Belfast. In
1886 he married Eliza Mullin who was raised about two miles west
of Jeremiah's home.
Shortly after marrying Eliza, Jeremiah went to New York State
and worked as a fireman on the C.P.R. As the railroad expanded to
Canada, Jeremiah came back and worked on the Ontario lines. He
was now a conductor and worked in the Toronto, Hamilton to Teeswater
area. His untimely death came as a result of falling off the
roof of a moving railroad car at Embro, Ont. Jeremiah and Eliza
had three boys and one girl. Jeremiah and Eliza are buried in
Greenhill Cemetery.
