Barnett Abbott, age 87, died
just before sunrise on Sunday,
March 21, 2004, at the Wayne
County Hospital after a brief illness.
Barnett was born on
November 22, 1916, to Alfred
and Linnie Abbott.
He was married to Lee
Guffey on May 25, 1941, and
they would have celebrated their
63rd wedding anniversary this
year.
At an early age, Barnett committed
his life to his Lord God.
He was a long time and faithful
member of the Monticello First
Baptist Church where he taught
the teenage boys Sunday School
Class, sang in the choir and ushered
for many years.
As a young man, Barnett
joined his father in drilling oil
wells in the Wayne County oil
fields around Parmleysville He
developed a keen interest in
machinery which led him to
later own and operate Abbott's
Machine Shop on the Parnell-
Stokes Road for over 40 years.
He delighted in fixing whatever
was brought to the shop which
ranged from the largest
Caterpillar road equipment to
the most complex farm machinery.
In the later days he focused
on his customer's favorite fishing
boat motors.
Barnett took great pride in
being a lifetime Mason and he
received his 60th year pin in
2003. As a young man, he joined
the Parmleysville Lodge in
September 1943, and later transferred
to the Monticello Lodge
#431 where he served in many
positions including the Lodge
Grand Master.
During his tenure as the
Monticello Lodge Grand
Master, he launched and drove
the construction of the new
lodge building which is a treasure
for all Masons.
His Masonic memberships
included the Monticello Lodge
#431, Monticello Chapter #152,
Somerset Council #68 and the
Somerset Commandry #31.
As a Scottish Rite 32nd
degree Shriner, his memberships
included the Lake
Cumberland Shrine Club of
Somerset, Scottish Rite Valley
#4 of Lexington, Oleika Shrine
Temple of Lexington and
Kentucky York Cross of Honor
(KYCH) He had served as past
President of the Lake
Cumberland Shrine Club of
Somerset, Ambassador to the
Oleika Temple of Lexington,
and past District Deputy of the
Grand Lodge of Kentucky
District 23. He received honorary
life memberships in all the
above Masonic and Shriner
Lodges.
Barnett also was a long time
and active member of the
Monticello Lions Club and the
Wayne County Sportsman Club.
Barnett is survived by his
wife, Lee Abbott, and one brother,
Raymond Abbott, plus many
nieces, nephews, great nieces,
and great nephews.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday morning, March 23,
2004, at the Heartland Funeral
Home chapel. Family members
gave personal remembrances
and Masonic services were provided
by the Knight's Templar
of Kentucky Commandry #31,
of Somerset.
Burial was in the Elk Spring
Cemetery.
Heartland Funeral Home in
charge of arrangements.
