Lee Guffey Abbott, 92 years of age, was born on July 15th, 1915, in Powersburg, Kentucky. She was the youngest child of John Francis Guffey and Millie Emerine Guffey. She departed this life on July 31st, 2007.
Lee married Barnett Abbott on May 25th, 1941. He preceded her in death on March 21st, 2004. She was a dedicated teacher to Wayne County and Monticello students for over 41 years plus 8 years as a Head Start teacher. She attended Campbellsville College and earned a BA degree from Eastern Kentucky University. She taught 21 plus years in the Wayne County one room schools and then 20 years in the Monticello Independent School elementary schools. She dearly loved her many students and took great pride in their achievements and families. The contributions and love of a very special teacher will long endure in their lives and memories. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Monticello. Her strong faith was most precious to her and she wrote many beautiful religious articles which were published in the Wayne County Outlook over many years. She possessed a very special gift to express her deep faith in the Lord. During retirement, she remained very active in many school activities. She was a cofounder of the 3R Museum and treasured in hosting school groups as they toured the one room school living museum. She delighted in telling personal experiences of a day gone by to the young students. She was a member of the Wayne County Retired Teachers and served for many years as their secretary and Outlook reporter. Lee and her twin sister, Marie Guffey Blevins, were always known as the Guffey Twins. All her siblings preceded her in death. They included: Nora Mae Guffey Guffey (1899-1967), Hattie Melvina Guffey Dalton (1904-1985), Dalton Luther Guffey (1907-1964), Hollas Francis Guffey (1909-1977), Vinnie Rhine Guffey Davis (1911-1986), and Marie Guffey Blevins (1915-2005).
She was survived by many nieces, nephews and their families. She is deeply missed by her twin sister Marie's sons, their wives and families, Dr. Parker and Margie Blevins of Austin, TX, Dr. Phillip and MaryJo Blevins of Jackson, MS, and Dr. Carter and Jo Blevins of Somerset, KY. She especially delighted in sharing in the lives of each of their children and they deeply loved their very special "Aunt Lee". They included: Grand Richard Blevins and Allison Hope Blevins Stivers who are children of Dr. Parker and Margie Blevins; Michael Joseph Blevins, Katherine Marie Blevins, Steven Matthew Blevins, Phillip Mark Blevins, Elizabeth Martha Blevins, Caroline McDaniel Blevins, and Leah Mary-Diderrich Michele Blevins who are children of Dr. Phillip and MaryJo Blevins; Sydney Jo Blevins daughter of Dr. Carter and Jo Blevins. Great great grand nieces and nephews are Christopher Reese Blevins who is the son of Michael and Sarah Blevins, and Jacob Arthur Stivers, Ashley Renee Stivers and Brooke Annika Stivers who are children of Allison and Paul Stivers and Charlotte Lee Blevins who is the daughter of Grant and Gloria Blevins.
