US Congressman. He moved to Illinois in 1819 and was a farmer when he began his political career, serving in the Illinois State House of Representatives (1822 to 1826), the State Senate (1826 to 1830), and as Lieutenant Governor of Illinois (1830 to 1833). During the Black Hawk War of 1832, he served as a volunteer in the state milita. In 1833 he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, and as an Independent Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving until 1843. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he again was a member of the State House of Representatives (1848 to 1852) and served in the State Senate from 1860 until his death. Caseyville, St. Clair County, Illinois, is named in his honor.
