Joseph William Armfield was born 3 Oct 1850 in Greensboro township, Henry county, Indiana to Calvin C. Armfield and Penninah E. Albertson.

Both the 1860 and 1870 US Census show him living in Liberty township, Greentown Post Office.

On Saturday, 9 Aug 1873 Joseph married Samantha O. "Mattie" Chandler in Howard county, Indiana (Howard County, Indiana Marriage Records, Vol. I, 1844-1874, p. 2). They had at least 9 children:

The 1880 US Census showed them living in Union township, Howard, Indiana.

By 1883, Joseph had a large farm of 220 acres near Centre Post Office, Howard County. He dealt extensively in hogs and cattle, shipping to Chicago, Cincinnati and Indinapolis.

Sometime between 1881 and 1900, Joseph and family moved to Taylor township, Howard, Indiana. Here they lived through the 1920 US Census.

Joseph's wife Samantha died 30 Jan 1905 in Greentown and was buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery. Joseph then married (2) Grace Savannah Thomas on 14 Jun 1911 in Marion county, Indiana (Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941). They had 3 children:

Walter Malone, b. 16 Apr 1916

Joseph was an active Republican.

Joseph passed away on Friday, 25 May 1923 presumably at his home in Taylor township. He was buried in the Greenlawn cemetery in Greentown, Indiana on the left side of his first wife Samantha. His headstone reads: "Joseph W. Armfield, Oct. 3, 1850, May 25, 1923". He is located in lot #110 in the "Old Part". His second wife Grace Savannah Thomas was later buried on the left side of him in 1933.
