JOHN A. BENDER
Cumberland - John A. Bender, 66, of 448 Walnut Street, died Wednesday, October 25, 1989, at the Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit.
Born September 18, 1923 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Alpheus F. and Ethel (Mulligan) Bender.
Mr. Bender was a retired employee of the CSX Railroad, Cumberland, where he worked for 35 years in the back shops. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a graduate of Cumberland's LaSalle High School and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 586, the Outdoor Club and the American Legion Post 13.
Surviving are his widow, Filomena (DeArcangelis) Bender; two sons, Thomas A. Bender, Cumberland; and Anthony J. Bender, Baltimore; two daughters, Mrs. Beverly A. Mohler and Mrs. Angela M. Abernathy, both of Cumberland; one brother, Randolph Bender, Glen Burnie; three sisters, Mrs. Almeda Stewart, Towson; Mrs. Eleanor Wilson, Wheaton; and Mrs. Ethel McLean, Arnold; and six grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Virginia Avenue, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Robert Hopkins. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
