Griffith Sampey was born in Roscommon County, Ireland about 1827. He was baptized at the Ballinlough Church of Ireland on October 17, 1827. He married 24th December 1851 at the age of 24 to Julia Linskae, age 15, in the Ballinlough Church of Ireland. He emigrated to American about 1855 with his wife and firstborn son, Neason Sampey.
He married his second wife Mary Ann Doherty (Dougherty) in Chicago, Illinois.
The Daily Inter Ocean, Cook County, Illinois, ran the notice of John's death on 12/12/1886:
"Sampey - Dec. 11, John, beloved husband of Mary Sampey, nee Doherty, of No. 3781 Wallace Street, aged 59 years.
Funeral to-morrow from his late residence at 9 am to the Church of Nativity, where requiem high mass will be celebrated and from thence by carriages to Mount Olivet Cemetery. "
