Wayne Harvey Bennion passed away at his home in Powell, Wyoming on March 27, 1998.
Wayne was born in Bennion, Utah on May 20, 1919 to William Ellis Bennion and Phoebe Effie Palmer Bennion, the fourth of nine sons. He attended Jordan High School, where he was active in athletics, especially basketball. After graduation, he enrolled at Utah State University, but was called to serve in the Army soon after Pearl Harbor was bombed. While stationed at Robins Field, Georgia, he met and married Reva Baird, a school teacher from Cowley, Wyoming, who was staying in Georgia for the summer. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 10, 1945.After living in Bennion, Utah and farming with his father for a few short years, they moved to Cowley, Wyoming in 1949. There, Wayne worked as a carpenter for Louis B. Welch Construction Company, building schools, churches and homes. He was a fine builder and along with many other projects, he built a beautiful house for his own family.
During this time, six children were born to the Bennions. Wayne was a great builder of homes as well as houses, and he and Reva provided a loving and happy environment for their children. Throughout his life, his family was the center of all he worked for and held dear.
In 1958, Wayne left the construction business and along with three brothers-in-law built a small oil refinery (Sage Creek Refining Company) in Cowley. This endeavor was very successful and gradually grew to include seven service stations and a farm delivery service. He was in the oil business until his retirement in 1985.
Wayne has always been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in leadership positions in the Sunday School and Young Men, was a counselor in the bishopric three times and served as bishop of the Cowley Ward. He taught classes in Primary, Sunday School and Priesthood Quorums and most recently worked in the scouting program. In 1988, he and Reva were called to serve a mission in Bacolad Philippines for 18 months. Through their hard work and diligent service, they had a great deal of success and their missionary experience was a memory that they cherished.
Throughout his life, Wayne found great joy in the church, his family and his friends. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and he truly enjoyed serving others. He loved being with his wife and family. As his family grew, and his children and grandchildren married, he took great pride and interest in each new spouse and grandchild. He also enjoyed sports, walking, biking and reading.
He is preceded in death by four brothers, Don, William, Stanley and Kenneth, and by a baby daughter. He is survived by his wife, Reva, Powell, WY; a daughter, Linda and Robert Andros, Sterling, VA; four sons, John and Margaret Bennion, Billings, MT; Dan and Lynn Bennion, Powell, WY; Doug and Cindy Bennion, Billings, MT; Mike Bennion, Detroit, MI; 36 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers and their wives, Morris and Faye Bennion, Murray, UT; Paul and Ardonna Bennion, Draper, UT; Rex and Colleen Bennion, Tooele, UT; Vern and Iris Bennion, Orem, UT. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and his life and example left a legacy that will be felt for generations.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell, Wyoming. Services will be held on Friday, April 3, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the LDS Chapel, Powell, Wyoming with interment at the Cowley Cemetery.
