Kearney A. Caulkins, 65, has become the second victim of a gasoline fed fire which swept through a double dwelling at 58 West Street in Oneonta. He died at 2:05 p. m. yesterday at Fox Memorial Hospital, unaware that his wife, Irene, 61, had perished in last Saturday night's tragic blaze.
Mr. Caulkins, an employee of the City of Oneonta Parks Department for more than three decades, suffered second and third degree burns over most of his body. Both he and his son, William, 24, fled the flash fire, which erupted when heat from a stove ignited fumes from two single gallon glass jugs of gasoline in the kitchen.
Mrs. Caulkins, an employee of Otsego Laundry in Broad Street, apparently tried to reach a telephone in a small bedroom off the kitchen.
- TRAPPED BY FIRE - She was trapped and died of burns and suffocation, according to Otsego County Coroner Fisk Brooks of Oneonta. He listed her death as accidental.
Her husband was found by firemen wandering about near the house with his trousers and other clothing still in flames. He had escaped by using a side stairway, while his son, who suffered no apparent injuries, used a front stairway to reach safety.
Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth Hooks said later William Caulkins had obtained the gasoline to start the family car.
- JUGS NEAR STOVE - Both jugs were on the floor, about 4 feet from the range where Mrs. Caulkins was cooking a ham, for about 4 hours before the explosion, according to Chief Hooks.
Firemen braved roaring flames and intense heat to reach Mrs. Caulkins in the bedroom, but without success.
Dr. J. Herbert Dietz was quoted by Fire Chief Joseph M. Scanlon as saying she had inhaled flames, heat and smoke, and died within a matter of minutes.
Her funeral was last Wednesday, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery at Cooperstown.
- MT. VISION NATIVE - A native of Mt. Vision, Mr. Caulkins was born Feb. 1, 1893, son of George and Eleanora (Denny) Caulkins.
He married the former Miss Irene McCarthy in October 1917, in Utica.
He was a member of the Oneonta Sportsman's Club.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Eleanora Yates, 68 Maple Street, Oneonta; two sons, William of Hobart, and Lawrence, with the U. S. Army in Hawaii; three daughters, Mrs. Paul Marino, 11 Liberty Street, Oneonta; Mrs. Anthony Kania, Scotia; Mrs. Edward Hitchcock, Schenectady; a sister, Mrs. Harry Duffy, 70 Maple Street, Oneonta, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m., Tuesday at the Bookhout Funeral Home by the Rev. George Thomson of Main Street Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.
