Helen E. Kania, 94, of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday May 9, 2013, at the Otsego Manor. Helen was born on December 16, 1918 in Cooperstown the daughter of Kearney and Irene (McCarthy) Caulkins. She married Anthony Kania on July 3, 1948, and he passed away on February 22, 1967. She attended Cooperstown School and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1937. Helen and Tony lived and worked in Utica, Colonie, and Oneonta. She was at one time office manager for WT Grant. In 1968, she moved to Utica and worked for Fleet Bank of Utica, now known as Bank of America. In 1983 she retired, and moved to Oneonta where she resided at Nader Towers. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Young at Heart Club, the Rosary Society, and the Busy Bee Club. She was also a volunteer at the Salvation Army. She is survived by a brother, Lawrence Caulkins of Perry; a sister, Loretta Hitchcock of Schenectady; her nieces and nephews, Paula Marino, Denise Marino, and Robert Marino of Oneonta, Brenda Mangan of Albany, Virginia Hitchcock of Ballston Spa, Elizabeth Hitchcock of Washington, DC, Susan Hitchcock of Schenectady, John Hitchcock of Fonda, Robert Hitchcock of Schenectady, Douglas Hitchcock of Schenectady, Edmund Hitchcock of Cape Coral, Fla., a special niece by marriage, Carol Kania Strife of Utica. She was predeceased by a sister, Alice Marino; two brothers, Robert Caulkins (killed in World War II), and William Caulkins. There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10:15 AM in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta with the Rev. Bernard Ampong, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. Helen's family would like to thank the staff at Otsego Manor on Country Meadows, and the Catskill Area Hospice for the wonderful care given to Helen (Grandma). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego Manor (Country Meadows Patient Activity Fund) or the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Dr. Oneonta, NY 13820.
