He was born in Iowa on February 19, 1888, the second son of Daniel Boone Slater, 1854 Missouri, and Nannie Elizabeth Bell Slater, 1863 Missouri, who migrated from Ray County, Missouri to Iowa, then to east Texas. Eventually they settled in Nolan County, Texas.
