He was killed by William Garrison in a saloon fight at the "emporium" - the only store on Frog Island near the Olive Branch "New Baltimore" church.

James married Edith,the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Taylor) Garrison, on 7 January 1841 in Hamilton County. They were the parents of three daughters: Nancy, Mary Ann, and Naomi Jane.
