Claude McCan Dies

Claude K. McCan, 74, prominent Victoria County ranchman and former president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, died Monday at 11 :45 a.m. in a local hospital following an illness of about a month. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the ranch home at McFaddin. McCabc-Carruth Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The Rev. John Newton of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
McCan was born Aug. 3,1890, in Victoria, son of the late James Ferdinand McCan and Emily D. McFaddin McCan.
The fourth generation cattleman served as president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association from 1912 to 1944. It was during his administration that the Secretary of Agriculture designated the association as the brand inspection agency for Texas cattle. During his term as president, be fought the OPA ceiling on cattle and urged that surplus meat be sent to the troops fighting in World War II.
McCan was one of the few cattlemen ever credited with creating a new breed of cattle, having developed the McFaddin Ranch "Victoria" cattle through a crossbreeding program involving the Hereford and Brahman breeds. Ho was also active in numerous programs of benefit to livestock producers, and served on the original board of The Southwest Animal Health Research Foundation, the organization that initialed efforts in 1962 to eradicate the costly screwworm from the Southwest.
On July 14, 1953, McCan was appointed chairman of what is now known as the state Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Committee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He served in this capacity until Dec. 31, 1954.
In 1955, he was again called upon to head another important undertaking affecting his industry. He was appointed chairman of a committee that developed the present Texas Commercial Feed Control Act, which became a model for several other states.
During the Eisenhower administration, he also served as a member of the Commodity Credit Corporation Advisory Board.
He served on the Texas Prison Board, now known as the Board of Corrections, from April, 1943, to June, 1947.
McCan also served as the first chairman of Victoria County Airport Commission, serving in that capacity from April, 18, 1952, until October of last year.
He was presented the Rotary Club Senior Citizen Award in 1970.
McCan attended Victoria schools, the Tome School in Maryland and the University of Texas.
All four Victoria banks announced Monday they will close at noon Wednesday for the services and remain closed for the remainder of the day. McCnn was chairman of the board of directors of First Victoria National Bank. Bronte Public Library will also be closed for the services.
McCan is survived by Iris wife, Mrs, Sue McCan; a daughter, Mrs. George Cannon of Denver, Colo.; a son, C. K. McCan Jr. of Victoria; and seven grandchildren, Maggie, Claudia, George, Kerry and Jim Cannon, all of Denver, and Claude and Bobby McCan of Victoria.
Pallbearers will be Leo Welder, W. B. Callan, Morris Roberts, Zae Lenz, H. J.
Hewitt, Roger Williams and Leonard Traylor.
