McCan, Painter of Sunsets, Dies Here
Boerne Artist Succumbs in S.A. Hospital After Illness.

He has painted his last sunset. And into that sunset he has gone home-out to the Golden West, from where he drew inspiration for his best pictures.

James Ferdinand McCan, noted painter, died in a San Antonio hospital Sunday morning. He came here, from Boerne, his home, week ago, for medical treatment. He had been in ill health for three years.

In Boerne 20 months, where he had set up a studio, McCan attained prominence as the painter of an eagle called "The Golden Monarch of the Golden West." - "Sweet Tralee" -"The Sphinx" and "The Texas Longhorns," are others' of his principal paintings. He refused .$50,000 for the egal painting. He planned a national exhibition tour.

Mr. McCan had lived in Victoria 30 years before moving into Boerne. He was born in Tralee, Ireland and came to this country when he was 28 years old, returning once to his native home for study.

He was an honorary member of the Victoria fire department, and designed floats for fire department parades for many years.

His family include .Claude K McCan of McFadden, son; Henry McCan of England, brother, and a sister in Russia. The funeral was held Monday in Victoria.
