He married Almeda E. Remington 14 Dec 1887 in Buffalo Co., Nebraska. Almeda and Levi had nine children: Lily O., William S., May Z., Ray C., Lodia V., Walter Lee, Marie, Lennard, and Maxine Lewis. Levi was a farmer, and in later years he acted as a cemetery caretaker.


Levi Wesley Lewis was born at Richland, Iowa on May 21, 1863 and departed this life at his home in Gibbon, June 1, 1934 at the age of 71 years and 10 days.

He was the son of Quaker parents, William and Julia Lewis and was the second of a family of ten children. When but a small boy he moved with his parents to Kansas. They lived there only a few years and then moved back to Richland, Iowa, It was at this place that he was converted.

In 1884 the family moved to Nebraska and settled at Sweetwater in Buffalo County. Two years later they moved to a homestead in Custer county and there in their home, they kept the post office of Udell, Nebraska. it was at this time that his father donated the land for the first Baptist church in that county.

On December 11, 1887 he was united in marriage to Almeda Remington. Nine children were born to this union. After marriage he lived in Custer county until 1894, when he and his family moved to Pleasanton, Nebraska. He united with the United Brethren church at Pleasanton, in 1899. He was an active member of this church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for several years.

In 1912 he and his family moved to Kearney, Nebraska and he united with the Kearney United Brethren church.

Since 1927 he and his family have resided in Gibbon. Here he united with the Baptist church, where he has been an active and loyal member. During this time he was sexton of the Gibbon cemetery for six years. He was preceded in death by one son, Walter Lee, who died in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his departure, besides his faithful and loving wife, the following children: Mrs. Lillian Payne of Batesland, S. D.; Willliam S. Lewis of Kearney, Nebr.; Mrs. Mae Cruise of Sidney, Nebr.; Ray C. Lewis of Grand Island, Nebr.; Mrs. Lodie Lavery of Sumner, Nebr.; Mrs. Marie Bearss of Kearney, Nebr.; Lennard Lewis of Grand Island, Nebr.; and Miss Maxine Lewis of Gibbon. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters besides a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church with Rev. Thomas in charge. Interment was in the Kearney Cemetery.
