Bertha came to America with a family group that included her Aunt Kjersti Larsdtr (Mrs. Erick Hanson Haugtvedt) and their children. Erick was Stephen Hansen's half brother. The group left Norway on 27 April 1871 and took the ship Anna Delius from Oslo to America, arriving at Quebec on June 7, 1871. Shortly after arriving, on November 18, 1871 she married Stephen Hansen Furua at Preston, Fillmore County, MN. Her brother Jens Larson was the witness.
The couple left Fillmore County and moved to Tansem Township in Clay County, MN to begin their married life. They had 6 children. Two died very young. A third child, Lise Marie "Lizzie" drowned the day before she was to be married. They buried her in her wedding gown. Bertha's death record did not indicate the cause of death.
