Joseph Mer(r)iam was the son of Joseph Merriam (1677-1750) and his wife Dorothy Brooks Meriam (1685-1774) of Concord, Middlesex Co., MA. He married twice. His first wife was Ruth Hunt (1713-1749), daughter of John and Mary Brown Hunt of Concord. Eight children were born to this union: Joseph (b. 1734), Ruth (b. 1736), Hannah (b. 1738), Mary (b. 1740), Ruth (b. 1741), Mary (b. 1743), Timothy (b. 1746), and Elisabeth (b. 1747/48). Ruth Mer(r)iam died in 1749. On December 26, 1754 Joseph remarried Hannah Paul Wadsworth (1718-1794), widow of David Wadsworth, in Grafton, Worcester Co., MA. The couple had one child: Anna (b. 1758).
