Another Pioneer Gone
The end of the earthly life of a pioneer of Sedgwick county came early Sunday morning, October 26 when Samuel O. Sackett passed to the life beyond. Mr. Sackett was a native of New York, born in Dutchess county November 26, 1834. In early manhood he went to Chicago and for a time assisted in the construction of the Chicago and Alton railroad. He and his brother Silas came to Kansas and entered land eight miles north west of Clearwater. Silas died some years ago and Samuel died on the old homestead. Mr. Sackett was married to Henrietta Newell in 1874. To this union one sons, George was born. Mrs. Sackett died when George was but seven months old. Mr. Sackett found as his second help mate Lucretia Beverly who died in May 1910. Since which time George and his father have lived alone on the farm in a quiet secluded way. About thirty five years ago he made profession of Christ and was baptized by Moses Parker of the Baptist church. His last sickness was of but few days duration and he peacefully passed to his reward at the ripe age of 77 years and 11 months.
The funeral service was conducted by W. V. Whinery pastor of the M. E. church, assisted by Rev. A. P. Sherman, pastor of the Christian church.
The large number of men who attended the funeral show the high esteem in which he was held.
His battles have been fought , his race run, the day's work has been completed and now he rests from all his labors.
