GRANDMA BOCK LAID TO REST SUN., MAY 29
Pioneer Mother Died Last Friday May 27 At Her Home
Funeral services for Mrs. Margarete Bock, an aged pioneer, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Zion's Lutheran church, the Rev. E. H. Widmann officiating. The pastor preached on the theme: Death Is Not Dying, but Departing (Luke 2, 29-30). Prayer service at the home preceded the church service. Two songs were sung at the church by Mrs. Galeard Tonsfeldt, Mrs. Carl Reimers, Howard Tonsfeldt and Leland Keel. They sang "Abide With Me" and "Nearer My God to Thee."
Mrs. Bock, nee Kruse, passed away at her home in Ogden Friday morning. The infirmities attendant to old age made themselves felt more and more in the past months and these contributed in great measure to her death. She reached an age of 87 years, 5 months, 4 days.
Grandma Bock, as she was lovingly known, was born in Germany, South Stoppel, Fredrickstown in December 23rd, 1850. She had thus passed her 87th birthday. At the age of 18 years she came to America and for a time lived in Clinton county, Iowa, later on removing to Missouri Valley, Iowa.
In 1871 she was joined in marriage to Jurgen Bock and the young couple made their home 10 miles from Missouri Valley on a farm. In 1881 Mr. and Mrs. Bock moved to Boone county, and resided on a farm 2 miles north of Ogden. Here they had relatives living. For 18 years they made their home on this farm, finally in 1900 retiring to town, where Mrs. Bock has resided ever since. Her husband preceded her in death some 25 years ago.
Grandma Bock was a devoted member of Zion's Lutheran church throughout her years in this community. She had been baptized and confirmed in Germany in the Lutheran faith and remained faithful to her creed during her entire life. When illness and old age infirmities prevented her from attending her house of worship, as regularly as she liked, she could be found without fail reading her devotions at home.
Grandma Bock had a host of old-time friends. It was her greatest delight to gather of an afternoon with them, either in their home or hers and recount experiences they had all had together in the early days. These friends will find one important link in their chain of friendship broken and they will miss her greatly.
She leaves to mourn her departure four daughters, Mrs. Hans Reimers and Mrs. Meinhart Reimers, both of Ogden; Carolena B. Heldt of Long Beach, California (who arrived in time to help care for her mother in her last illness) and Mrs. Emma Kuhl also of Ogden. Two sons of Grandma Bock died in early infancy. Thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren are also among the mourners.
