Laura Eugenia was the youngest of nine children born to John Reason and Mary Melinda Scott Bell: Myrtle (Mertie) 1873, Irene (Ina) 1876, Nellie Alice 1878, Infant son 1880, Leroy (Penney) Ernest 1885, Herbert (Bert) Harrison 1888, Glen (Pup) Samuel 1892, Geneva (Jennie) Minerva 1897 and Laura Eugenia 1900.

Laura married Walter E. Backus 20 Aug 1918 and they had a family of three children: Kathryn Aleta 1920, Marvin Lyle 1921 and Nancy Jo.

W. in Altoona, died of a heart ailment Friday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, and burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Born in Maxwell, Mrs. Backus lived in Altoona for 45 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Polk County Federated Womens Club and Polk County Farm Bureau. Survivors include her husband, Walter; a daughter, Nancy Mills of Cumming; a son, Marvin of Des Moines; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home."
