At 18 years of age he joined the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. While at his apartment in Houston, he was introduced by his landlady to his soon-to-be-wife, Cleo Kondos (whom had just lost her husband). She was the daughter of Peter Kondos and Hazel Belle Boyce. After a quick courtship they married on 23 Jan 1954. They had two children:
*William Penfield Cooper, Jr
*Victoria Margaret Cooper
In 1960 William moved his family to the small town of Vista, California where he remained the rest of his life. While in his 40's, he completed college and was employed at an important San Diego Electronics firm for nearly 20 years. He managed and oversaw the development of the instrument panel for the first Apollo mission.
He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Vista. CA
