He was a school teacher, having taught in a rural school in Billmore, MO. He was employed by Frisco Railroad, retiring as an engineer after 35 years of service and was a cattle farmer.
He was a 50-year mason and a member of the Clifton Masonic Lodge 463 in Thayer.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Thayer and served on the church finance committee.
He was an avid sportsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising bird dogs.
He was a devoted husband, and loving father who will be missed. Survivors include three daughters, Margie Shipp of Thayer, MO; Pat Best and her husband, Paul, of Mammoth Spring; and Bonnie Jo Dickenson and her husband, Ralph, of Park Hills, MO; eight grandchildren and their families, Robyn and Andrea Richter of Thayer, MO; Ann Rolls and her husband, David and their children, William and Sara of Fredericksburg, VA; Paul J. Best II of Gainesville, FL; Peter L. Best of Fairfax, VA; Patrick Waymon Best and his wife, Sarah, of New York, NY; Margi Cook and her husband, Mark, and their sons, Ben and Andrew of St. Louis, MO; Vicki Temm and her husband, Scott Bohnenkamp of Austin, TX; two step-grandchildren and their families, Karen Oglesby and her husband, Bill and their sons, Will and Mathew of Pecos, TX; and Kathleen Drew and her husband, David and their children, Olivia and Austin of Orange Park, FL; four brothers, Paul and Willard Caldwell; J.C. Caldwell and his wife, Freda; and Bob Caldwell and his wife, Shirley, all of Thayer; three sisters-in-law, Ethel Caldwell of Maynard, AR; Anita and Amy Caldwell of Thayer, MO; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Joe Tom Caldwell; four brothers, Wesley, Roy Lee, Warren and Darrell Caldwell; one infant sister, Mary Evelyn; and two sisters-in-law, Mae and Ruth Caldwell.
Services were May 4 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Dr. Bill Banks officiating. Burial was in Myrtle Cemetery in Myrtle, MO, with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., of Thayer, MO.
Active pallbearers were Larry Caldwell, Stanley Caldwell, Rocky Caldwell, Robert Lee Caldwell, Quinn Caldwell and Joe Dan Caldwell. Honorary pallbearers were Steve Caldwell, Adam Caldwell, Joe Dan Tucker, Ray Helm, Ken Scott, Denzil Caldwell, Shannon Caldwell, Shann Caldwell, Ray Whiteside and Clarence James.
