Susannah Whitaker was born to William and Elizabeth Carleton Whitaker, in 1727 in Kennett Square, Chester, Pennsylvaia. Susannah was born third of nine children and her siblings were Lydia, Marcus, Samuel, William, Peter, Joshua, Sarah and Jane Whitaker. Susannah's parents were born and married in Ireland and immigrated to America in 1721. They were Quakers.

Susannah married outside her faith, Quaker religion, to Hugh McCrary, in 1749. Together Susannah and Hugh had ten children and they were John, Ann, Lydia, Reid, Boyd, Meheela, Hugh Jr., Elizabeth, Nancy Ann (Suannah) and Margaret.

On October 20, 1800, Susannah Whitaker McCrary passed away. Her grave stone reads: "Here lies the body of Susannah McCrary, who departed this life October 20, 1800. Age 73 years. My race is run, My life is done. My resting place is here. The stone was got to keep the spot. Lest men should dig too near".
