We know not where Hugh McCrary was born, exactly, but is thought to be in Ireland. We do not know who his parents were but by 1749, he was found to be living in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Whitaker in 1749. Since Susannah was a Quaker and married outside her faith, she had testimony presented against her before the Bradford Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, for marrying Hugh McCrary on August 17, 1749.
Hugh acquired his first propery, when he bought 467 acres on Abbotts Creek on November 2, 1760. He also obtained a grant from Earl Granville for land on both sides of Swearing Creek (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book)
Together Hugh and Susannah had nine children and they were John, Ann, Lydia, Reid, Boyd, Hugh, Elizabeth, Nancy Ann (Susannah) and Margaret.
In 1785, Hugh McCrary, Sr. was buried by his dear wife, Susannah. Hugh's monument reads: "Here Lies the Body of Hugh McCrary. You lookers on and standers by, As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so must you be. Therefore prepare to follow me."
