In 1880 he was single and serving as the U.S. Indian Agent for the Southern Utes in Colorado. Henry joined the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), and was the Department of Utah Commander in 1890. He also was Companion #00777 in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the U.S., the first post-War veterans' organization. He was commissioned Major in the commissary department for service in the Spanish-American War in 1898-99.
