Merced Herald
June 26, 1869
DIED
At his residence, in Merced county, June 19th, 1869, John T. Stockard, aged 49 years one month and 26 days.
Mr. Stockird was born in Carroll county, Tennessee, April 23d, 1820. He came to California at an early day and settled upon the Merced river, pursuing the business of stock raising. He has ever been considered an honorable man and a useful citizen, possessing the entire confidence of all who knew him, and ever held the highest esteem by those with whom he came in contact.
He leaves a large and interesting family who are inconsolable for his loss; and his neighbors consider his death a public calamity. At the time of his decease and for a long time previous he stood high in the Masonic order, and his remains were followed to their last resting place by a large number of his brethren of the mystic tie, and a great concourse of friends from the surrounding country.
