Thursday afternoon as we were at press a telephone message from Snelling announced the untimely death of Harry C Stockird of Hopeton, which was caused by pneumonia. The press was stopped and simply a death notice inserted.
Harry C Stockird was the son of the late John T Stockird and the late Mrs William L Silman, pioneer residents of Merced County. He was a native of Merced County aged forty years of age and spent all his life as a farmer on the ranch where he died. He was educated in the public schools and in 1'881 he was married to Miss Cordelia Strong, daughter of the late Hon James M Strong and Mrs Ann Strong of Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz county, who were also early settlers of this county. The fruits of their union were four children, two sons and two daughters. The wife and children survive him. He also leaves three brothers and two sister to mourn his loss. His brothers are Edward and Robert Stockird and a half brother Arch Silman, and his sisters are Mrs Laura F Hamilton and Mrs James G Ruddle.
Harry was a polite and genial young man especially courteous to those who were older than himself. His sudden death was a surprise to his friends and acquaintances and is much regretted. The funeral took place from his late residence on Saturday last and the internment was in the family plot at Hopeton.
