American Western Frontier Outlaw. He was a member of "The James Gang". During the Civil War, he rode with Confederate partisan William C. Quantrill, and was in Samuels Depot, Kentucky when Quantrill was killed. On July 26, 1865, his brother Bud along with Frank James surrendered to Union troops in Samuels Depot. He and Jesse James avoided capture. In 1866, he and his brother Bud fled to Kentucky after both being identified as the robbers of the Liberty, Missouri bank at 2:00 pm on February 13, 1866. This became one of the nation's first successful daylight bank robberies during peacetime. It is not known if he and his brother were ever brought to justice. From 1871 to 1896, he was sheriff of Nelson County, Kentucky. He died of typhoid.
