Patience Jane STRICKLAND DePRIEST was born in Wayne County, Mississippi, to Simeon S. STRICKLAND and Jane "Jennie" HALE STRICKLAND. It is presumed that her father, Simeon S. STRICKLAND, was an Indian Trader in the Creek Country of Alabama and in a visit to Fish Ponds, Alabama, met Jennie HALE, a daughter of Hannah HALE (Captive White Wife). Simeon and Jane were married around 1803. He brought her back to Wayne County, Mississippi where they lived and reared a family. Among their ten children was born Patience Jane STRICKLAND.
Patience married Alexander D. DePRIEST, son of James Farr DePRIEST II and Amelia ATWOOD DePRIEST, about 1844 in Wayne County, Mississippi. Alexander's gr gr gr gr grandfather was Robert Deprosse, a French Huguenot, who immigrated to Virginia in the late 1600's.
Patience Jane STRICKLAND DePRIEST and Alexander DePRIEST had seven children:
-1. Harriet DePRIEST HOSEY b. 5 NOV 1844 in Bay Springs, Jasper Co., MS -2. John Hines DePRIEST b. 15 DEC 1849 in Jasper Co., MS -3. Thomas James DePRIEST b. 27 MAR 1852 in Jasper Co., MS -4. Harriet Juliette Jane DePRIEST ATWOOD b. 11 FEB 1855 in Bay Springs, Jasper Co., MS -5. Mary DePRIEST SAMPSON b. ABT 1856 in Corinth, Alcorn Co., MS -6. Melviny "Viney" DePRIEST WILLIAMS EDWARDS b. 15 MAR 1857 in Jasper Co., MS -7. Emily "Emma" DePRIEST SIMMONS b. ABT 1860 in Jasper Co., MS
Patience Jane STRICKLAND DePRIEST moved from Fishertown (Eufaula, OK) to Bixby, Oklahoma after the death of her husband, Alexander D. DePRIEST in 1902. Her great grand daughters, Nellie CALL and Gracie CALL ( From Patience' son: Thomas James DePRIEST and James' daughter Pearl Lee DePRIEST CALL) are also buried in Sanger Cemetery, near Bixby, Oklahoma.
Her gravestone is marked "Patience DePRIST - Born: 1819 - Died: Sept 18 1904" The 1900 US Census gives her birth date as June 1825 which most accept as more accurate. The spelling is the same as her husband's gravestone who is buried at Fishertown (Eufaula, Oklahoma): "A.D. DePRIST". This is the only spelling of DePRIEST seen or found in the family.
Some feel it was a mistake made by the maker of the tombstone for Alexander and repeated on the tombstone of Patience. You can see where the stone carver ran out of space for the spelling of DePRIEST on Alexander's grave stone. All other family buried in the same family plot spell the their name as DePRIEST.
