Merrill was killed while trying to hop a train, having missed it as it pulled from the station. Father of a posthumous son, Merle H. Smith. Brother of Grant Hershberger, Annie Weaver, Ora Dunmire and George Smith.

"FRANKSTOWN - The remains of Merle Smith, the unfortunate young man who met an untimely death on the railroad in the Altoona yard on Saturday night, were brought here from his late home at Gallitzen Tuesday morning. The funeral cortege proceeded to the Methodist church where services were conducted by Rev. F.G. Sleep, after which interment was made in the Geeseytown cemetery."
