Daughter of Isaac and Isabella (Ramage) Hershberger. Wife of William Smith and William Lewis. She was also associated for a number of years with Albert Sanders of Duncansville and is referred to in the obit of one of her children as his wife, but the marriage was never valid. Mother of Grant Hershberger, Annie Smith Weaver, Ora Smith Dunmire, George and Merrill Smith. Also mother of Mary Sanders, Thomas Hershberger and John Smith, all of whom died in childhood. Stepmother of William Lewis, Lucy Lewis Garman and Mary Lewis Garman. Sister of Wilson, Samuel and William Hershberger, Mary Ling and Martha Cartwright. Emma died in Glen White, Blair Co., and was buried with her first husband, William Smith.
2005: I could locate no individual tombstone for her in 1988, although records indicate that one existed. It is probable that her inscription is on the same stone as William, although I could not detect any other inscription in '88. Her husband's stone is now face up in the river ravine below the cemetery, so the opposite side cannot be checked. The Smith plot is located near the bottom center of the lower cemetery, just to the west of the stone for Margaret Mingle.
Update - October 2009: Jim Snyder, of the BCGS, whom I met by chance at the cemetery in August, recently went down into the ravine and turned over the Smith stone, and found Emma's inscription was indeed on the opposite side.
Update - August 2015: Dennis Hileman, caretaker of the cemetery, arranged for the stone to be retrieved from the ravine, and it is back on its base.
