Dollie Marie Gary Tatum was the daughter of Rev. John Willie Gary and Sallie Ida Downing. She was born on December 7, 1915 in Texas.

Dollie had nine siblings: Jodie Ray Gary, Tabatha Pauline Gary (Cole), Maudie Dean "Maudine" Gary, Willie Bell Gary (Burcham), John Cornell "JC" Gary, Melvin Cleo Gary, Thelma Gary (Wolfe), William Thomas "Bill" Gary, and Claudius "Claudy" Gary.

Dollie married Ollie Dee Tatum, presumably around 1931, in Mississippi. Together, they had 15 children: Shelton Tatum, Eunice Janette Tatum (Burns), twins Earline Tatum (Beck, Lewis) and Merline Tatum (who died in infancy), Shirley K. Tatum (Kellum), Shelby Jean Tatum (Blade), Rev. David C. "DC" Tatum, Sally Tatum (Matlock), Patricia R. "Pat" Tatum (Hernandez), Emma Joyce Tatum (stillborn), Carolyn Joann Tatum, Cynthia "Cindy" Tatum (Jackson, Curtis), James W. Tatum Sr., Mickey Tatum, and Robert C. Tatum.

Dollie was a retired Avon Representative and a member of New Life Church of God in Greenville. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, and friend; she was loved by all who knew her.

On May 29, 2003, Dollie died of heart failure at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. Dollie was preceded in death by her husband in 1960. Their son, Rev. David C. "DC" Tatum, co-officiated her service. Both Dollie and Ollie are buried at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, also in Greenville.
