Sallie Ida Downing Gary was the daughter of William Thomas Downing and Martha Ellen Clark. She was born on September 7, 1891 in Lone Oak, Texas. She moved with John to Greenville, Mississippi in 1926 where she lived for 34 years.

Sallie had six siblings: Claude Lee Downing, James William Downing, Frances Ada Downing (Duncan, Haley), John Burl Downing, George Thomas Downing, and Joseph Riley "Joe" Downing.

In 1909, Sallie married Rev. John Willie Gary in Bryan, Texas. Together, they had 10 children: Jodie Ray Gary, Dollie Marie Gary (Tatum), Tabatha Pauline Gary (Cain, Cole), Maudie Dean "Maudine" Gary, Willie Bell Gary (Burcham), John Cornell "JC" Gary, Melvin Cleo Gary, Thelma Gary (Wolfe), William Thomas "Bill" Gary, and Claudius "Claudie" Gary. There may have been two children who died in infancy: Grace Lee Gary and Nellie May Gary. She was a loving wife and mother who did not work outside of the home.

Sallie died of a stroke and pneumonia at Delta Medical Center in Greenville, Mississippi on December 5, 1976. She was buried alongside her husband at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, also in Greenville.
