He was the son of Hugh Herrin & Nancy Partlow. Married Mary N. Tate and Margaret Jane Barron. During the Civil War he served in the 18th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Catawba Light Infantry, Company H as a Private. He was severely wounded in the thigh at the Battle of the Crater.

He is mentioned in one of William Choate's letters that was written to his wife Rachel Simril and was published in the book "Recollections nad Reminiscences 1861-1865, Vol. 9" published by the SC UDC p. 112.
