Robert Cooper Propst was born in Columbia, SC, the eldest son of John Henry Propst and Roberta Paige Cooper Propst. He graduated from Aiken Institute in 1937 and Clemson A&M College in 1941. He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps, which became the Air Force.
He retired from Savannah River Laboratory in 1982, after over 40 years with the DuPont company as an analytical chemist and analytical electrochemist. He was a member of Sigma Xi, American Chemical Society and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
