Herbert Sumner Aldrich was an early pioneer of the Wrightstown, MN community.
He was born to John H. and Angenette Aldrich on December 2, 1861 at Centralia, Wisconsin.
As a very young boy he moved with his parents to southern Minnesota, settling near Winnebago. On July 3, 1874, they moved to Ottertail County, settling near Parkers Prairie, and soon after moved to Wrightstown, MN. "The family experienced many hardships, along with other early pioneers, one being an Indian fright when they took their possessions and spent a night in the woods" (from newspaper obituary).
On November 24, 1883 he was united in marriage to Jennie Barbara Cameron, who died four years later, on November 19, 1887. To this union was born one daughter, Nellie May.
On December 16, 1897, he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane Perkins, and to them were born two daughters and five sons: Hazel, Myrtle, Paul, Kenneth, Renold, Laverne and Stanley.
As young men, Herbert Aldrich and his brother started the first post office and trading post at Wrightstown. He remained active in the business for over half a century.
He was an active member in the Wrightstown United Brethren Church, and for several years was a member of the Board of Administration of the Minnesota conference. For many years he was also an active member and officer of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Mr. Aldrich died on September 5, 1939 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 3 days, 60 years to the day after the passing of his father.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 at his home, followed by a 2 pm service at the Wrightstown Church, under the direction of the Domian Mortuary. The services were conducted by Rev. W.P. Watkins, Rev. D.K. Gordy, and Rev. B. Scott McNeely.
