Minerva Bailey Carlton, age 72, of Alexandria, VA, passed away peacefully in her home on April 20, 2014, surrounded by her family. Judy was born in Washington, DC to James and Alma Larkin Bailey, and grew up in Prince WIlliam County, VA , where she graduated from Osbourn High School in 1960. Judy married Loren "Ben" Downard in 1960 and had four children. They lived in Virginia and then Southern California until after her divorce when she brought her children back to Virginia to live. Judy had to work to support her family while they were growing up but her true love was always her sewing and gardening, and being with her family. She is survived by her husband, Walter Carlton, as well as her children, Loren "Ben" Downard, James "Sonny" Downard, and Michael Downard of Manassas, and Christian "Michelle" Downard of Alexandria, as well as seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 1608 Russell Road, Alexandria, VA 22301, on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
