He was born in Screven County, Georgia on June 19, 1935. He was a retired 7th Special Forces Sergeant First Class with a tour in Korea and 2 tours in Vietnam. Gene went on to work for the US Post Office retiring in 1992. After living most of his life in LA, he spent the last five years in Marshall near his son Keith Prewitt. He is also survived by three other sons and a step-daughter: Eugene Phillips of Little Rock, Johnny Phillips of Louisiana, and David Wayne Phillips of North Carolina, Jennifer Leighton of Alabama. Gene was one of twelve children with three sisters surviving, Patricia Franca, Mary Howell and Helen Clayton all of South Carolina. He has seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nephews and nieces. He was a favorite resident at Highland Court and will be missed by all who knew him.

Graveside services will be 11:00 A.M., Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery in North Little, Rock, Arkansas with Chaplin Ryan officiating. Pallbearers will be the Honor Guard.

Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas.
