William was the son of Enos Davis (1842-1898) and his wife Mary (1852-?), who were originally from Missouri and living in Oregon by 1869. He was the twin of Lucy Davis.

In 1906, he married Mary Magdelene Williams (1883-1968), the daughter of Patrick H. Williams (1856-?) and Bettie Seeley (1858-1948). In 1912, William and Mary adopted Maxine Elizabeth Beeney (1912-1992). Three years later, they had one biological daughter, Virginia Davis.

William died in 1960. His funeral, which was officiated by Rev. Stevenson, was held on the 26 January 1960 at The Little Chapel of the Chimes, following which he was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park.
