Mary, who often went by the name "Linnie" (a nickname derived from her middle name), was born in Wisconsin, the daughter of Patrick H. Williams (1856-?) and Bettie Seely (1858-1947). She came to live in Oregon by 1892. By 1900, her parents divorced and her mother founded the Williams Potato Chip Company.

In 1906, she married William P. Davis (1876-1960). Mary and William adopted Maxine Elizabeth Beeney (1912-1992), and had one biological child, Virginia Davis, in 1915.

On her mother's side, she was the granddaughter of Boyd Ferguson Seeley (1835-1909) and Rebecca Allen (1837-1923). Boyd served in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War.
