Esther M. (Hall) Biggers wrote the following regarding Margaret, who was her great-grand-aunt . . . "Margaret Roberts was born February 22, 1822, daughter of Elisha Roberts. He was one of the first settlers of San Augustine around 1821. Margaret was the youngest child of the Roberts family, and the only one born in Texas [sic, i.e., census records say she was born in Louisiana]. She was a sister to Mahala Lee Roberts, grandmother of Horace and Jim Hall. Margaret Roberts married Alex McDonald, who was born in Canada. She is listed in the Texas 1850 census as living in Trinity with her husband.

"Mrs. McDonald was a very young lady when Sam Houston came to her father's inn in San Augustine, and she helped to nurse him back to health after the Battle of San Jacinto. For her kindness he gave her a candle mold, and this mold was given by a Mr. Summ(er)field Roberts to the Texas State History Collection in Dallas, Texas.

"Mrs. McDonald's father, Elisha Roberts, was one of the early Alcaldes of San Augustine. He was a large land owner, and he gave to Margaret a large amount of land in Trinity County, and to her sister Mahala he gave land in Houston County."
